At DentalFix, Dr. Octavio Jiménez, a dental surgeon, applies Swarovski crystal tooth gems at our clinic in Villa de Cortés, Mexico City. It's a short, single-visit procedure with no drilling, and you can have the gem removed whenever you want.
The basics
What a tooth gem is
A small crystal, usually under three millimeters, bonded to the outer surface of the enamel. It sits on the tooth: nothing is drilled, inset or pierced.
Non-invasive
It's bonded with the same adhesive and curing light used for tooth-colored fillings. The enamel is lightly etched, not ground down.
No anesthesia
The procedure happens entirely on the outer enamel, which has no nerve endings.
Reversible
The gem is removed in the clinic and the surface polished back to its original shine.
Swarovski crystal
Consistent cut and size, so the sparkle is even and the base sits well on the tooth.
If a "tooth gem" involves a drill, it isn't a tooth gem: it's permanent damage to a healthy tooth.
One visit
How the appointment works
Everything happens in one visit of roughly 20 to 40 minutes, depending on how many gems you choose and where they go.

Check-up. The dentist looks at the tooth, gums and bite. A cavity or tartar is treated first; a gem should never cover a problem.

Design try-on. The gem is placed dry on your tooth so you can see size, color and position in the mirror before anything is fixed.

Bonding. The surface is cleaned, kept dry, etched, and the gem is set with dental adhesive and light-cured.

Finishing. Edges are polished and your bite is checked so the gem isn't hit when you close.
You leave with the gem on. If it comes off within the first few days, we replace it.

After your visit
Aftercare basics
- You can eat and drink right after the appointment. For the first 48 hours, avoid biting directly with that tooth.
- Don't bite hard things with it, like ice or pens.
- Brush gently around the gem with a soft brush; skip very abrasive toothpastes.
- Keep flossing daily; floss doesn't touch the gem.
- If it comes off, don't glue it back at home. Keep it and book a visit.

Does getting a tooth gem hurt?
No. There's no anesthesia because nothing needs numbing: everything happens on the outer enamel. You may notice the lip retractors and a slightly sour taste from the etching gel.
Do you drill into the tooth?
No. The gem is bonded on top of the enamel. No step uses a drill or removes tooth structure.
How long does a tooth gem last?
With professional bonding, from about six months to several years. Placement and habits like chewing ice or clenching at night make the difference.
